How To Maintain A Healthy Home

By Admin

Maintain A Healthy HomeMaking your home healthier is not as hard as many people seem to think. There are small things you can do that will go a long way in helping you improve the health of your home.

Some of these are easy fixes that you can do when you have some free time. Some of them will need you to change some of your lifetime habits. The main objective of having a healthy home is limiting exposure to toxic chemicals.

They are everywhere and exposure can be a difficult thing to avoid. The good thing is that there are a number of things people can do to minimize exposure. The key toxins in your home are lead and pesticides. Some of these toxins can have both short and long-term effects on the body. Below are some tips you can use to ensure you have a healthy home.

Get house dust under control

House dust aggravates allergies. It can also contain hazardous chemicals including lead, pesticides, fire retardants, and other chemicals. This is something you should never take lightly. Even if these chemicals were used many years ago, the dust can still accumulate in your house dust. The best and most expensive way to deal with this problem is replacing the wall to wall carpeting with wood, tile, cork, or non-vinyl linoleum. If this option is not economically feasible for you, then you can opt for the old-fashioned elbow grease.

You should also vacuum frequently, getting into the corners, along the floorboards, and moving the furniture. The vacuum you use should have strong suction and a HEPA filter so that the dust and dirt can go into the bag. Vacuuming twice a week will help a lot.

Kick the smoking addiction

If you smoke, then it is time to kick it. It is estimated that 40% of American children are exposed to secondhand smoke at home and it is the biggest trigger of asthma for them. Smoking is also an expensive, and quitting can save you a lot of money. There are many different options you can take to quit the habit.

Get your home tested

Lead poisoning has been shown to cause brain damage in developing fetus and young children of not treated. Radon has been shown to cause cancer. The main origin of lead at home is old paint and dust that forms after paint chips and erodes. This is common in older homes that used paint with lead before they were banned.

Radon gas usually comes from the breakdown of soil and rock underneath your home. Testing your home for radon is not expensive. Before you can buy a product to use in your home, it is a good idea to know whether it is safe or not. There are some products that contain harmful chemicals that many people don’t realize. Having a healthy more is very important because you will feel more comfortable and there is a reduced risk of getting sick.
